From Student Dreamer to Startup Founder — The Journey of Mwila Kapenya

Empowering Innovation with Purpose

When Mwila Kapenya joined the Hub as a second-year Computer Science student at the University of Zambia, she didn’t imagine that two years later she’d be running her own tech startup — AgriSense Zambia — a company developing mobile tools to help smallholder farmers track soil health and rainfall patterns.

Through the Hub’s mentorship and prototype lab, Mwila learned to turn ideas into tangible solutions. She worked with mentors from the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) and participated in the Innovate Lusaka Challenge.

“The Hub taught me that innovation isn’t about having resources — it’s about resourcefulness,” Mwila says.

Today, AgriSense is piloting with 300 farmers in Southern Province. Mwila often returns to the Hub to mentor new cohorts, proving that impact multiplies when one innovator lifts another.
